CF launches
IV Peoples' Summit Website
The IV Peoples'
Summit is taking place in Trinidad and Tobago, April 16-18, 2009.
As we did during the III Peoples' Summit in 2005, Common Frontiers
is hosting an information website (www.commonfrontiers.ca/IVpeoplessummit/)
for Canadians who plan to attend the event or want to keep up to
date on what's happening. The site includes information about the
event, practical information and the latest summit news. CF members
who attend will also be filing on-site commentary and posting pictures
during the event.
The IV Peoples'
Summit will coincide with the V Summit of the Americas and will
be a meeting place for social movements from the hemisphere that
stand for social justice, equity, peace and sustainable development.
This Peoples'
Summit is of profound importance for social movements of the continent
as it takes place in the context of significant changes in the geopolitical
map of the Americas. The Washington Consensus mentality that characterized
the first few official summits is now discredited with social movements,
and increasingly newly-elected governments, pursuing alternatives
to the neo-liberal agenda.
The IV Peoples
Summit participants will be discussing the crisis of international
capitalism as evidenced by: the collapse of the world's financial
system; the crises of debt, food, energy and water; and the degradation
of the environment and its implications. We will also meet in the
context of the increasing threat of militarization and the criminalization
of protest.
At this significant
juncture in the history of our region, it is absolutely critical
that Caribbean activists, including those from Cuba, and members
of social movements, civil society and other regional networks utilize
this rare opportunity to fuel the work that we do through discussion,
analysis and collaboration with brothers and sisters from other
Caribbean states, Latin America and North America.
The IV Peoples Summit is organized by the Hemispheric Social Alliance
of which Common Frontiers is the Canadian Chapter. Common Frontiers
is a multi-sectoral network of organizations involved in research,
education and political action on issues related to economic integration
in the Americas.
Members of Common
Frontiers include faith groups, trade unions, environmental groups,
international development organizations, as well as student and
other social sectors, all with a national/international mandate.
